This is the story of the Voyage of James Caird, the 23-foot open whaler that carried Ernest Shackleton and his crew from Elephant Island 800 miles south of Cape Horn to South Georgia during the winter of 1916. The voyage's mission was to rescue the rest of the team from the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition of 1914–17, which had been trapped on Elephant Island after the loss of its ship Endurance. Historians have ranked the James Caird's voyage as one of the greatest open boat journeys ever accomplished.
